What the science says
Glycerin — A humectant that draws water into the outermost skin layer and helps maintain moisture barrier properties, improving surface softness and suppleness. [1]
Sodium PCA and humectants — Research on the skin's natural moisturising factor (NMF), a mix of small water-binding molecules, found that it helps the outermost layer hold water; sodium PCA is a water-binding molecule of this kind. [2]
Emollients and humectants — Emollients smooth the skin surface while humectants bind water; results depend on the whole formula and on regular use. [3]
Glycerin and betaine sit 5th and 7th in the formula, with jojoba seed oil at 10th and sodium PCA at 11th, providing hydration and softness with a dry touch. Sodium hyaluronate is at position 24 in a minor amount. Botanical extracts of rosehip, watercress and ginkgo appear after the fragrance in modest amounts. Fragranced with patchouli, atlas cedar, vanillin and coumarin; coumarin is a known fragrance allergen; intended only for body use.

Which of the two scents — and what differs on the label
Both serums share one formula. Only the fragrance changes, and the fragrance decides which allergens have to be declared:
- Woody Amber & Leather — this one. Declared: Vanillin, Linalyl Acetate, Linalool, Coumarin, with patchouli and atlas cedar oils. It is the only one of the two that contains coumarin.
- Spices & Sandalwood — declared: Linalyl Acetate, Beta-Caryophyllene, Pinene, Limonene, Linalool, with juniper, cedar, patchouli and lavender oils. No coumarin, but it does carry limonene and lavender oil.
Worth knowing if you are comparing across the range: neither body serum contains benzyl alcohol, and both hand creams do. If benzyl alcohol is what you react to, the serum works for you where the matching hand cream does not.
Serum, not lotion
The difference is real rather than a naming choice. A lotion is an emulsion built to sit and slowly sink; this is thinner, absorbs in seconds and leaves a dry finish, which is why you can dress straight afterwards. What it does not do is seal as heavily as a rich cream — on genuinely rough skin, a urea cream does more.

Both share the same hydrating serum base. Woody Amber & Leather features deeper amber, atlas cedar and patchouli notes with coumarin. Spices & Sandalwood features spiced notes without coumarin.
Can this body serum be used on the face?
No. This serum is formulated and labelled specifically for the body. For facial skincare, choose products formulated for the face.
Does this body serum contain benzyl alcohol?
No. Neither body serum in the SERICA range contains benzyl alcohol. The formula uses sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate.
