What the science says

Panthenol — In controlled volunteer studies, skin that received panthenol held more water in its outermost layer and lost less water over 7 days than skin that received the base alone. [1]

Glycerin — A classic humectant that draws water into the outermost skin layer, supporting suppleness, softness and the skin's moisture barrier. [2]

Sunflower seed oil and emollients — Research on moisturisers found that emollients keep the skin smooth and break the dry-skin cycle. [3]

The cited panthenol study compared skin that received dexpanthenol with skin that received the base alone over 7 days, not this cream. Here, sunflower seed oil is second, glycerin third, hydroxyethyl urea fourth and panthenol seventh; the pack states 5% urea. Sodium hyaluronate and lactic acid are near the end of the list, in small amounts. Urea can sting on cracked skin: do not apply to broken or damaged skin.
