What the science says

Coconut-derived cleansers — In research on shampoos, cleansing agents (surfactants) lifted oil and dirt from scalp and hair; it was not a test of this wash, but the same kind of cleansing agent does the work here. [1]

The cited research is about cleansing agents in shampoos, not about this wash. Here sodium coco-sulfate, sodium cocoamphoacetate and coco-glucoside, with cocamidopropyl betaine and betaine, do the cleansing and lathering. Organic quince fruit extract is ingredient 11, after the fragrance, in a small amount, and we quote no study for it. Benzyl alcohol is the one declared fragrance allergen.

These are published studies on the ingredients, not tests of this product. Study concentrations and formulas differ from ours; individual results vary.

Your routine

  1. Apply 1–2 pumps to damp hands or body.
  2. Massage to create a generous, fragrant lather, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  3. Do not apply to broken or damaged skin; avoid direct contact with the eyes.

Who it's for

Anyone seeking a gentle daily wash for hands or body that lathers generously, with a warm, sweet amber and vanilla scent.

Good to know

  • For hands and body.
  • Vegan, gluten free and naturally certified.
  • One declared fragrance allergen — Benzyl Alcohol.
  • What "fragrance free" actually means explains how to read these names on any label.

Which of the four scents — and the difference that matters

All four share one formula and differ only in the fragrance. But the fragrances are not equivalent on the label, and that is the thing worth knowing before you buy:

  • Patchouli & Amber Vanilla — this one. The sweetest and the heaviest of the four, and the one that lingers longest on the hands. One declared fragrance allergen: Benzyl Alcohol.
  • Ginger & Smoky Cardamom — warm but drier and less sweet. Also one: Benzyl Alcohol.
  • Peppermint & Dark Cedar — cool and dry. Also one: Benzyl Alcohol.
  • Grapefruit — bright citrus, and the outlier: seven declared allergens, because the scent is built on citrus essential oils.

So if fragrance allergens are your concern, three of the four are equivalent and grapefruit is the one to skip. If you would rather avoid the question entirely, the SERAVIA™ Face & Body Cleanser is the low-fragrance option, though note it contains hydrolysed wheat protein.

Questions

The questions people actually ask

Short answers from what is printed on the pack. If what you need is not here, ask us before you buy rather than after.

Answers refer to the formula printed on the pack you receive.

What does the Patchouli & Amber Vanilla scent smell like?

It is rich and warm: vanilla and amber balance the character of patchouli, leaving skin lightly scented with a sweet, resinous note.

Does this wash contain known fragrance allergens?

It contains one declared allergen: Benzyl Alcohol. Citrus terpenes like limonene and linalool are not present in this scent profile.

Can I use it on my face?

It is made for hands and body, and that is what the label says. For facial cleansing, choose a wash specifically formulated for the face.

Does it contain sulfates?

Yes. The second ingredient is sodium coco-sulfate, a coconut-derived surfactant, alongside three milder cleansers. If you avoid sulfates entirely, this is not the wash for you.

Does it leave skin feeling dry or tight?

It is formulated with betaine, a plant humectant, and a balanced surfactant blend to rinse clean without leaving skin feeling tight or dry.

How should I use BALNEA™ Hand & Body Wash?

Apply to damp skin on hands or body, work into a lather, and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Is it vegan?

Yes. It is labelled vegan on the front of the bottle, and contains no animal-derived ingredients.

How much is in the bottle?

490 ml, in an amber pump bottle.
