What the science says
Coconut-derived surfactants — In research on shampoos, cleansing agents (surfactants) lifted oil and dirt from scalp and hair; it was not a test of this wash, but the same kind of cleansing agent does the work here. [1]
Plant humectants — Research on moisturising ingredients notes that humectants hydrate the outermost skin layer. Results depend on the whole formula and on regular use; in a wash-off product the effect is small. [2]
The cited research is about cleansing agents in shampoos and about moisturising ingredients in general, not about this wash. Here the coconut-derived cleansers (sodium coco-sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoamphoacetate, coco-glucoside) lead the list, with betaine as ingredient 6. Organic blueberry fruit extract is ingredient 10, after the fragrance, in a small amount. The citrus essential oils bring seven declared fragrance allergens, including limonene and citral; if you react to essential oils, one of our other scents may suit you better.
These are published studies on the ingredients, not tests of this product. Study concentrations and formulas differ from ours; individual results vary.

Who it's for
Anyone seeking a refreshing daily wash for hands and body with a sharp citrus grapefruit scent. Note: Contains seven declared fragrance allergens from essential oils.
Good to know
- For hands and body.
- Vegan.
- Seven declared fragrance allergens — Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene, Citronellol, Citral, Benzyl Salicylate, Geraniol, Linalool. The other three scents declare one.
- What "fragrance free" actually means explains how to read these names on any label.
Which of the four scents — and the difference that matters
All four share one formula and differ only in the fragrance. But the fragrances are not equivalent on the label, and that is the thing worth knowing before you buy:
- Grapefruit — this one. It declares seven fragrance allergens: Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene, Citronellol, Citral, Benzyl Salicylate, Geraniol and Linalool. That is the trade-off for a citrus scent built on essential oils rather than a synthetic accord.
- Peppermint & Dark Cedar — cool and dry. One declared allergen: Benzyl Alcohol.
- Ginger & Smoky Cardamom — warm and spiced. One declared allergen: Benzyl Alcohol.
- Patchouli & Amber Vanilla — sweet and resinous. One declared allergen: Benzyl Alcohol.
If you know you react to limonene or linalool — the two most common fragrance allergens in cosmetics — one of the other three is the safer pick. And if you would rather avoid the question entirely, the SERAVIA™ Face & Body Cleanser is the low-fragrance option in the same size, though note it contains hydrolysed wheat protein.

The questions people actually ask
Short answers from what is printed on the pack. If what you need is not here, ask us before you buy rather than after.
Answers refer to the formula printed on the pack you receive.
Why does this scent declare 7 fragrance allergens?
Because the grapefruit scent is built on natural essential oils, and citrus essential oils bring their own fragrance components — limonene, citral, citronellol, geraniol, linalool and benzyl salicylate. Each is declared on the label.
Can I use it on my face?
It is made for hands and body, and that is what the label says. For facial cleansing, choose a wash specifically formulated for the face.
Does it contain sulfates?
Yes. The second ingredient is sodium coco-sulfate, a coconut-derived surfactant, alongside three milder cleansers. If you avoid sulfates entirely, this is not the wash for you.
Does it leave skin feeling dry or tight?
It is formulated with betaine, a plant humectant, and a balanced surfactant blend to rinse clean without leaving skin feeling tight or dry.
How should I use BALNEA™ Hand & Body Wash?
Apply to damp skin on hands or body, work into a lather, and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Is it vegan?
Yes. It is labelled vegan on the front of the bottle, and contains no animal-derived ingredients.
How much is in the bottle?
490 ml, in an amber pump bottle.
