So what does L-lysine actually do?
We are not allowed to tell you, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The EU Register of nutrition and health claims contains no authorised wording for L-lysine, so any sentence a seller writes about what it does for the immune system, cold sores or recovery is one the regulator has not approved.

Why is the dose 1,000 mg of hydrochloride but only 800 mg pure lysine?
Because the hydrochloride salt is 80% pure L-lysine by weight — the rest is the hydrochloride portion of the molecule. Both figures are printed on the label so you can see the split rather than guess at it.
Is it vegan?
Yes. The capsule shell is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, the ingredient list has nothing else in it besides the L-lysine hydrochloride itself, and the label states the L-lysine hydrochloride is plant-fermented.
