What the science says
Aloe vera — In research on moisturising creams, versions containing aloe raised the water content of the outermost skin layer after 2 weeks, compared with the same cream without aloe. [1]
Plant emollients and humectants — Research on moisturising ingredients notes that emollients help keep skin smooth, while humectants hydrate the outermost skin layer. Results depend on the whole formula and on regular use. [2]
The cited aloe study compared creams with and without aloe; we do not know how the aloe level in our concealer compares with the one in the study, so we quote it only as research on the ingredient. Organic aloe leaf juice is the first ingredient here, followed by plant oils, butter and waxes. Hyaluronic acid, peony root and blueberry extracts sit near the end of the INCI list, after the preservative, so they are present in small amounts and we do not credit them with a visible effect.

Is this your shade?
35 is where the concealer range ends, and it is neutral. The foundation goes three steps deeper than this — 40, 45 and 50 — so if your foundation is 45 Deep Warm or 50 Deep Cool, 35 is the closest concealer we make rather than an exact undertone match. That is a limit of the range, not a recommendation, and it is worth knowing before you order.
- Under the eye — this is the shade if your foundation is 40 Deep Neutral or deeper. The one-step-lighter rule is at its most unforgiving here: on deep skin, a concealer more than one step lighter reads as a grey patch in every photograph.
- On blemishes and redness — match your foundation depth instead, so 35 covers on deep skin.
- As a contour — on tan skin, 35 sits about one shade deeper than the complexion, which is the right distance for a soft contour.
- If it looks too deep — 30 Tan Neutral is the step below.
