What the research says
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 64 healthy Japanese adults aged 40 to under 80 (mean about 71 in completers). Participants received 21.5 mg per day of PQQ disodium salt for 12 weeks. Scores on several cognitive test domains (memory, attention, reaction time) were higher in the PQQ group than in the placebo group. The manufacturer of the ingredient was involved in the study, and the dose is close to that of this product.
A randomised, placebo-controlled trial included 23 healthy untrained men who received 20 mg of PQQ per day during 6 weeks of endurance training. Aerobic performance and body composition did not differ between PQQ and placebo, while a marker of mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC-1alpha protein) was higher in the PQQ group. The sample was small.
