So what does ashwagandha actually do?
We are not allowed to tell you, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The EU Register of nutrition and health claims contains no authorised wording for ashwagandha, so any sentence a seller writes about stress, sleep or cortisol is one the regulator has not approved.
What we can print is the number: 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract per capsule, standardised to 10% withanolides.
Why does the label give a percentage of withanolides?
Withanolides are the compounds ashwagandha extracts are measured by, and 10% is at the concentrated end of what is sold. The label states it so the 30 mg per capsule can be checked, not as a statement of effect.
Is 300 mg the whole capsule or just the extract?
Just the extract. The label states 300 mg of ashwagandha root dry extract, which makes up 59% of the capsule; the rest is the shell, gum arabic and L-leucine.
Is it vegan?
Yes. The capsule shell is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose rather than gelatine, and nothing in the ingredient list comes from an animal. The product carries no allergen labelling under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011.
