What the science says

Aloe vera — In research on moisturising creams, versions containing aloe raised the water content of the outermost skin layer after 2 weeks, compared with the same cream without aloe. [1]

Glycerin — Research on glycerin found that it improves hydration of the outermost skin layer, the skin's moisture barrier and its softness and suppleness. [2]

These studies look at aloe and glycerin in general, not at our foundation. Organic aloe leaf juice is the first ingredient and glycerin is ingredient 8 of 46. Hexapeptide-11 is ingredient 30, after the fragrance, and the two forms of hyaluronic acid are 32 and 33, so they are present in small amounts and we do not credit them with a visible effect. Kaolin and rice starch soak up surface shine; we make no claim about oil regulation. Contains beeswax, so it is not vegan.

  2. Press onto the centre of the face and blend outwards using fingertips, a foundation brush or a damp sponge.
  3. Build a second thin layer where more coverage is desired.
  4. Allow the semi-matte texture to set naturally; dust with translucent powder only if a flatter finish is preferred.

Is this your shade?

Cool at the deepest step — blue or red-violet undertones rather than golden. It is one of only two cool shades in the range, the other being 15 at the light end, and nothing in the range is deeper. If 50 still reads too light on you, we do not make one that fits, and we would rather say so than sell you a compromise.

  • Flash photography. Titanium dioxide reflects camera flash efficiently and the effect is at its most visible here. It is a property of mineral pigment rather than a shade error — less product on the high points, and no titanium-heavy powder over the top.
  • Concealer note, honestly. Our concealer stops at 35 Deep Neutral. 35 is the closest we make at this depth, and it is neutral rather than cool — a close fit, not a match. Worth knowing before you order.
  • Undertone beats depth. A shade half a step off in depth reads as a bit of colour; a shade in the wrong undertone reads as grey or orange, and at this depth everyone can see it.
  • The step below — 45 Deep Warm and 40 Deep Neutral.

How should I apply VELOURIS™ Smoothing Foundation?

Warm a small amount on the back of your hand. Press onto the centre of the face and blend outwards with fingers, a brush or a damp sponge. Build a second thin layer where you want more coverage.

Is shade 50 Deep Cool right for me?

Shade 50 Deep Cool is the deepest of the ten shades, and cool. It has blue or red-violet undertones rather than golden, providing the deepest step where the range ends.

Does this foundation need to be set with powder?

No. Natural kaolin clay and rice starch allow the texture to set by itself to a semi-matte finish. You only need powder over it if you prefer a flatter finish.

Which skin types is it suitable for?

It is suitable for all skin types. Kaolin and rice starch provide a semi-matte finish, while organic aloe juice, hyaluronic acid and beeswax keep skin feeling comfortable.

Does it contain fragrance?

It has a light citrus note from bergamot, lemon and bitter orange peel oils. Limonene, linalool and citral occur naturally in these essential oils and are declared on the label.

Is it vegan and certified?

It contains organic beeswax, so it is not vegan. It is certified COSMOS NATURAL by Ecocert Greenlife, as printed on the carton.
